「四者、自有眾生雖受持讀誦唯逐文句，不知義理，不解修行，唯以直心讀誦為業，雖無巧偽勝過前人，猶非究竟。此上二人俱不捨聖教而不得義理也。

"Fourth, there are sentient beings who, although upholding, reading, and reciting, merely chase after words and phrases, not knowing the principle and not understanding cultivation. Merely with a straightforward mind do they take reading and reciting as their practice. Although without deceit and superior to the former people, they are still not ultimate. Both of these two above do not abandon the sacred teachings, yet do not attain the principle.
