一有力收多為用，則卷他一切入於一中，即上文「一切即一，皆同無性」也。多有力收一為體，則舒己一位入於一切，即上文「一即一切，因果歷然」也。文雖先後，義乃同時，故云卷舒自在也。

When the one has power and absorbs the many to be its function, it contracts all others into the one; this is the aforementioned 'All is the one; all alike lack intrinsic nature.' When the many have power and absorb the one to be their essence, it expands its own single position into all; this is the aforementioned 'The one is all; cause and effect are distinct and clear.' Although the text has before and after, the meaning is simultaneous; hence it is said to 'contract and expand with freedom.'
