1.74

因說四諦而悟解，故號聲聞。既除我執，未達法空，故名愚法。有本作「愚人法名聲聞教」。然此一教下攝人天，由深必收淺，故上該緣覺，以其理果同故。例如約人辨藏，唯出聲聞藏耳。

Because they awaken and understand through the preaching of the four noble truths, they are named śrāvakas. Having eliminated the attachment to self but not yet realized the emptiness of dharmas, they are called 'deluded about dharmas.' Some editions have: 'The teaching of fools is called the śrāvaka teaching.' However, this single teaching subsumes humans and devas below, for what is profound necessarily includes the shallow; thus above it extends to pratyekabuddhas, because their principle and fruit are identical. It is like distinguishing the piṭakas in terms of persons, where only the śrāvaka-piṭaka is cited.
