頓者，言說頓絕、理性頓顯，一念不生即是佛等。故《楞伽》云「頓者，如鏡中像頓現非漸。」此亦有二：一逐機頓，即此文示之；二化儀頓，即後圓教收之。

'Sudden' means that verbal expression is abruptly severed, the nature of principle is abruptly revealed, and not giving rise to a single thought is precisely being a buddha, and so forth. Thus the Laṅkāvatāra states: 'The sudden is like reflections in a mirror appearing abruptly, not gradually.' This also has two aspects: first, sudden in accordance with faculties, which this text demonstrates; second, sudden in teaching method, which the subsequent perfect teaching subsumes.
