I have pondered deeply on the Great Sūtra and modestly practiced this contemplation; gathering its essential principles, I have already recorded them in the commentary. Yet fearing that my karmic efforts might fall short regarding the profound sūtra, I had seldom praised and expounded this mysterious essential. Those of sincere devotion have occasionally raised it, and several disciples earnestly besought me, entreating me to elucidate it once, all saying: "Focusing our thoughts, visiting friends and tracing the source, studying or transmitting, we have widely sought all explanations, yet doubts and blockages accumulated over years are only now illuminated. We are vigilant and earnest day and night, wishing you to explain the profound meaning." Considering that I am in the twilight years of life, like a candle in the wind difficult to preserve, and fearing that the wondrous contemplation might sink into oblivion, allowing divergent words to confuse its path, I have complied with their sincere request and briefly analyzed its subtle depths, entitling it The Mysterious Mirror of the Dharmadhātu. I hope that future friends in the Way will see the profound intent of the ancient worthy.
