Second, inquiring and explaining. The principle of true emptiness is fundamentally as such of itself; but because of deludedly stirring thoughts and grasping at characteristics, it is necessary to refute and eliminate emotional attachments to manifest the principle. Now that feelings are forgotten and intellect is extinguished, there is only the fundamental true nature; how could any newly generated category of understanding remain? If there is any category of understanding, it is stirring thoughts. Stirring thoughts gives rise to mind, and therefore loses right mindfulness. Right mindfulness is knowing without thought. If there were no knowing at all, how could it be called right mindfulness? Below this, the four gates are generally distinguished.
