除事法界也，事不獨立故，法界宗中無孤單法故。若獨觀之，即事情計之境，非觀智之境故。若分析義門，即有其四；今以對能觀之智，故唯三重。此三但是一道竪窮、展轉玄妙，非初法界外別有第二第三。既不旁橫，故云三重，不云三段。

Excluding the dharmadhātu of phenomena, because phenomena do not stand independently, and in the Dharmadhātu school there are no isolated dharmas. If one contemplates them in isolation, they are the realm of phenomenal emotional reckonings, not the realm of contemplative wisdom. If analyzing the gates of meaning, there are four; now, in contrast to the wisdom that can contemplate, there are only three tiers. These three are merely a single path vertically exhausted, becoming progressively mysterious and wondrous, not that there are a second and third separate from the initial dharmadhātu. Since they are not laid out horizontally side by side, they are called three tiers, not three sections.
