The sūtra says: 'All existent and non-existent phenomena in the three realms cannot serve as a metaphor for this.' Here, through concluding with praise, the subsequent metaphors are simultaneously delimited: they also cannot be viewed through the worldly sentiments [of ordinary people]. How could worldly people see the whole of an entire great ocean within a single wave? Above, the explanation concluding with praise is finished. From here below, pointing via metaphors has three parts: first, illustrating the non-obstruction of large and small; second, illustrating the non-obstruction of one and different; third, illustrating all phenomena each entirely pervading. This merely uses the ocean and waves to point to the positions of principle and phenomena so as to distinguish their doctrinal characteristics, not to serve as a complete metaphor for the teaching.
