1.42

釋上句也。以聞經說色空，不知色性空，便執色相以為真空，故須簡也。此簡凡夫及初心菩薩，不簡小乘，小乘不計色為即空故。

This explains the first clause. Because upon hearing the sūtras teach that rūpa is śūnyatā, not knowing that the nature of rūpa is empty, one immediately grasps the characteristics of rūpa to be true emptiness; hence this must be eliminated. This eliminates [the errors of] ordinary beings and beginners among bodhisattvas; it does not eliminate [those of] the Hīnayāna, because the Hīnayāna does not calculate rūpa as being identical to śūnyatā.
