"Crude" means light, careless, and inattentive. Zhuangzi says: "In governing, do not be crude; in ruling the people, do not be hasty and sloppy." Formerly, Chan Master Zhile of Mount Lingyun in Fuzhou stayed long with Chan Master Dawei You. One day, upon seeing peach blossoms, he suddenly awakened to the Way, presenting a gāthā to Weishan: "For thirty years I have sought a master of the sword; / How many times have leaves fallen and new branches sprouted? / Ever since I once saw the peach blossoms, / Right up to now I have never doubted again." Weishan said: "Awakening through conditions, there is never any regression. Guard it well." At that time, Xuansha heard it mentioned and said: "Fitting, extremely fitting; yet I dare guarantee that the elder brother has not penetrated thoroughly." Thus it is called "circuitous," meaning indirect and not granting approval.
