Dreaming on the bed of nirvāṇa, suddenly awakened upon hearing the teaching. This gāthā addresses the illness of clinging to emptiness and nihilistic extinction. It means that these people grasp phenomena outside the mind, destroy form to clarify emptiness, cling to the aggregates, realms, and so forth as having real self-entities, and falsely calculate the extinction of the future faculties and objects as nirvāṇa; thereupon they abhor suffering and rejoice in calm extinction, reducing their bodies to ashes and extinguishing their wisdom, forever equating themselves with great space and taking calm extinction as bliss. Therefore Chan Master Dixin gathered the meaning of true emptiness not destroying illusory existence from the great sūtra to startle awake the śrāvakas who tend toward calm extinction, causing them to turn their minds toward the Great [Vehicle]. If they do not turn their minds, it is like dreaming a great dream throughout a long night; when would they ever awake? The Commentary says: 'The two vehicles' nihilistic extinction returns to nirvāṇa.'
