不知蹈破茄子，一夜蝦䗫索命。義曰：謂凡夫執色實有自體，以青黃之相非是真空之理。疏云「以聞經說色空，不知色性空，便執色相以為真空。」計色不忘，故須揀也。《觀》云「二實色不即真空。實色是所揀，以幻色即真空故，是能揀法」也。

Not knowing one has stepped on an eggplant, all night the frog demands a life. The meaning is: It refers to ordinary beings who cling to form as having a real self-entity, because the characteristics of blue and yellow are not the principle of true emptiness. The Commentary says: 'Because they hear the sūtras speak of form and emptiness, but do not know the nature of form is empty, they straightaway cling to the characteristics of form as being true emptiness.' Clinging to form without forgetting it, it must be screened out. The Contemplation says: 'Second, substantial form is not identical with true emptiness. Substantial form is what is screened out; because illusory form is identical with true emptiness, this is the screening Dharma.'
