With a single thought of unselfish illumination, / grief and joy are both removed. This gāthā illustrates the dual dismissal by metaphor. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: There was a woman named Goddess of Virtue, who always walked ahead asking people for lodging. A person asked her: 'What can you do?' The woman answered: 'Wherever I arrive, people live in harmony and all rejoice.' The person then lodged her. Soon after she stayed, another woman was seen standing outside the gate. The host asked: 'Who are you?' She answered: 'My name is Darkness; I too come seeking lodging.' The host said: 'What can you do?' The woman answered: 'Wherever I arrive, I cause people grief and fear, and the entire family is unhappy.' The person said: 'Leave! I do not need you.' The woman said: 'You are too foolish. My sister is in your house; how could I not go in? From beginningless time we have always followed each other and never separated.' Having spoken these words, she straightaway entered the room. At that time, when the master of the house saw the woman enter, indeed the entire family wept in sorrow and suffering. The sūtra's meaning is that the Goddess of Virtue symbolizes people's love of life, and the Dark Maiden symbolizes people's fear of death. Those who possess wisdom neither cherish nor despise, and they escape both grief and joy. This is cited as a wondrous illustration of the dual screening. The Third Patriarch said: 'The Supreme Way is not difficult; / it merely dislikes picking and choosing. / Simply do not hate or love, / and it will be thoroughly clear.'
