People have ancient and modern differences; / the Dao has no distinction of before and after. This gāthā illustrates that once the purport of mind-only is realized, why must it depend only on earlier people? Fadeng said: 'It makes me think of Nanquan.' The actual limit right before one's eyes is known only to fellow travelers of the Way. Yimen said: 'Do not bother asking Nanquan.' Severing the entangling vines, one intimately consents to oneself. However, the two masters cited the story of Nanquan, and it is fully quoted in the gāthā on the word 'flower'. Now, as for Yimen saying 'it is just this', what is the meaning? Does it refer to the words above about the wind carrying rain and pond lotuses? Or does it seize the other's reputation? If you can determine it, you will straightaway see the dynamic presence presented within the phrase coming right at your face, with a vajra eye completely devoid of fine dust. If it is not yet clear, the dynamic of 'just this' revealing principle will completely leak out within the gāthā.
