Do not take the willow on the embankment
And call it the pine on an ancient cliff.
This verse: The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: "Mahāmati, there are some non-Buddhists whose awareness conceives the twenty-five realities as nirvāṇa." It refers to their teaching establishing twenty-five principles, the very first principle being called the dark nature principle (prakṛti), which they posit as permanent. The twenty-fifth is called the spiritual self (puruṣa), also posited as permanent. When the self thinks upon superior objects, the dark nature transforms, producing twenty-three principles for the self's enjoyment. Once the self enjoys them, it is bound by objects and cannot attain liberation. If the self does not think, the dark principle does not transform, and since there is no bondage, the self is liberated; this is called nirvāṇa. Also, the Śūraṅgama Sūtra says: "Without any discrimination, neither form nor emptiness, Gośālī and others darkly take this to be the Dark Principle."
