只見錐頭利，不見鑿頭方。此頌涅槃者，此翻滅度、無為、圓寂三義。為二乘人厭生死之苦受、欣涅槃之寂樂，捨有餘而趣無餘，昧本覺而成空病矣。檐寂情深，故成不迴病耳。

They only see the sharpness of the awl's tip,
Failing to see the squareness of the chisel's head.
This verse: Nirvāṇa is translated here with three meanings: extinction, unconditioned, and perfect quiescence. Because practitioners of the two vehicles loathe the suffering feeling of birth and death and rejoice in the quiet bliss of nirvāṇa, abandoning [nirvāṇa] with remainder to head toward [nirvāṇa] without remainder, they obscure fundamental awakening and fall into the illness of emptiness. Their sentiment of abiding in quiescence is deep, hence they develop the illness of non-return.
