將南作北情猶恕，掘地尋天更可悲。此頌著相凡夫不達相即無相，廣設相而相外求真，何異迷人將南作北迷情難遣。又如掘地尋天，何日相應？遠之遠矣。故佛言：迷中倍人，誠可憐愍耳。

Mistaking south for north might still be pardoned; / Digging the earth to seek the sky is even more pitiful. This gāthā praises how ordinary people attached to marks fail to realize that marks are precisely markless; they broadly set up marks and seek the truth outside marks. How is this different from a confused person mistaking south for north, whose confused sentiments are hard to dispel? Furthermore, it is like digging the earth to look for the sky—on what day could it ever correspond? It is far, so very far! Hence the Buddha said: 'The doubly confused among the confused are truly to be pitied.'
