Sitting inside a sandalwood grove, / The nostrils do not perceive the fragrance. This gāthā praises the interfusion of circumstantial and direct retribution in the two preceding lines, which is the realm of Vairocana's wisdom of the great bodhisattvas. The śrāvakas still block their sight and hearing at the auspicious assembly; how much more so for the confused, delusional bodies and minds of ordinary beings—how could they perceive or know? Foguo said: 'Presently, seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing are definitely this dharma, yet this dharma is apart from seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing. If one is attached to seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing, then it is merely seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing.' Generally speaking, persons who have realized the Dharma transcend seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing, do not abide in seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing, yet come to make use of seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing. Having said that, tell me, how do you express the phrase about making use of it?
