Pervading and abiding are unified; / The distant and the near are manifested together. 'Nowhere present' means that its substance is empty and pervades the ten directions—this is distant. 'Nowhere absent' means there is nowhere it is not present; without destroying marks, it abides right before one's eyes—this is near. Elder Li said: 'The boundless realms of lands—self and other are not separated by the tip of a hair; the ten periods of past and present—from beginning to end are not apart from the present thought.' Furthermore, the Vimalakīrti-sūtra says: 'The goddess asked Śāriputra: "Where do the physical forms of a female body abide right now?" Śāriputra said: "They are nowhere present and nowhere absent." The goddess said: "All things are also like this."' That which is 'nowhere present and nowhere absent' is what the Buddha taught.
