"When the site is superior, there are many heroes; / In the nature-ocean, wind and waves arise."
This verse means that the teaching style of the Avataṃsaka arose in Chang'an, the capital of Gaozu of the Han. He said to his ministers: "I wish my descendants to have lasting peace (chang'an) here"; hence it was named Chang'an. Great Qin was the dynastic name of the First Emperor, who originally dwelt in Chang'an, called Great Qin; consequently the plain was called Qin Plain, and later in the Tang it was changed to Avataṃsaka Plain. Those who translated and expounded, propagating and explaining, are beyond count. For instance, the Tripiṭaka masters Buddhabhadra, Śikṣānanda, and others were all noble monks from foreign lands who specially brought the Great Teaching to the translation arenas to propagate and translate, transmitting the sūtra's meaning, just like those Persians entering Chang'an of Great Qin. Furthermore, Preceptor Dushun, Venerable Yunhua [Zhiyan], National Preceptor Xianshou, Qingliang, Guifeng, and others composed commentaries and subcommentaries, expounding and disseminating, also just like Persians who are skilled at discerning gems.
