"Blended seamlessly without inside or outside, / Harmoniously interfused, high and low are equal."
The meaning is: Universal (pu) means broad and great. It broadly gathers the differentiated phenomena of one and many from the previous nine gates, and its meaning broadly encompasses the natures and characteristics of the provisional and real, sudden and gradual, of the three vehicles. Interfusion (rong) means harmony, meaning the harmonious interfusion of the layer upon layer of one and many from the previous two gates, host and companion being simultaneous without hindrance. The first gate is the root of meaning, serving as the initial foundation for generating the subsequent gates. The tenth is the summary gate, serving as the treasury that collects and includes the previous phenomena. Furthermore, ten is the number of perfection, gathering phenomenon by phenomenon so that all are perfect; hence it is called universal interfusion. The profound purport of the Great Sūtra is exhausted in this gate, illuminating the inexhaustible multi-layered barriers of the dharmadhātu and accommodating the host of purely genuine and differentiated images.
