"Having fathomed the wonder of the root source, / Follow the current and let them count the grains of sand; / Only by following the current does one attain the wonder; / Remaining on the shore instead deludes people."
This verse means that by thoroughly fathoming the contemplation gate, one subtly understands that principle and phenomena are completely interfused, like every branch obtaining the root, like every stream meeting the source. What harm is there in expounding the teaching to deliver beings? How does it obstruct distinguishing names and characteristics? Encountering superior persons, one directly points to the mind of perfect interfusion; meeting the middling and lower streams, one meanderingly shows the teaching of phenomenal sequence. Following the current to attain wonder, one lets them enter the sea to count grains of sand; penetrating the deep root of dharmas, one follows them in seeking branches and picking leaves. Employing the unobstructed wisdom of the three contemplations, one exhausts the gathering of all faculties; with the compassion of identical substance and ultimate peak, all return to the profound path of universal interfusion.
