When clothes are torn, thin bones are revealed; / When the house is broken, one sleeps looking at the stars. In this verse, "torn clothes" means that phenomenal dharmas are empty in substance. The "precious pearl" is the reality of principle. If one suddenly lets go of emotional thoughts and the deluded mind of seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing, and penetrates with the eye of contemplative wisdom, within each and every phenomenon principle is completely revealed. It is also like the poor son returning home: meeting the elder who points out the jewel in his clothes, he suddenly turns his head and sees that inside the ragged clothes there is indeed a bright pearl, and following his heart he instantly becomes wealthy.
