This refers to people of middling faculties. When they suddenly hear the Great Scripture say that upon the first generation of the mind [of awakening], one immediately encompasses the five stages and achieves right awakening, and that by brief hearing and perfuming, before even taking a step, light radiates, fulfilling the three levels and ten grounds—such words startle ordinary ears and the principle transcends conventional sentiment. In vague bewilderment, doubtful and alarmed, as if existing and as if forgotten, their nature cannot firmly resolve.
