The Records of the Western Regions says: East of the Congling mountains there are barbarian kingdoms, several tens of thousands of li from the five regions of India; it is not the Buddha's birthplace. Mundane people and outsiders in this land have grown accustomed to calling the Buddha a western barbarian. Yet the "Tathāgata's Names Chapter" of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: "This Sahā world contains one billion four-continent worlds, and the Tathāgata has tens of billions of various names therein, causing sentient beings to have individual understanding and vision as he preaches the Dharma for them." Now, what could be wrong with the Great Master following popular custom to call the Buddha an old barbarian?
