2.29

Merged in quiescence and illumination, the cold night is long; / Light and dark interfuse perfectly before any omen appears.
The meaning is: 'Cessation' means blocking and ceasing, ceasing the emotional attachments of the previous eight gates. 'Total' means stopping and ending, ending the understanding that proceeds to practice in the nine gates. In the previous gates, there was emptiness that could be form and form that could be emptiness; now in this gate, neither is established, both emotional attachments perish, causing the mind to be beyond duality, with nowhere to rely. Using this as a gate, contemplative wisdom is born. The first phrase corresponds to 'form is emptiness' in the Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya Sūtra; the second phrase corresponds to 'emptiness is form'; the third phrase corresponds to 'form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form'; this phrase corresponds to 'the empty characteristics of all dharmas up to no wisdom and no attainment,' revealing that the substance of dharmas is free from all characteristics, identical with this principle of true emptiness, equal to the initial teaching of the Great Vehicle.
