Where the spiritual radiance is singly revealed, / It is purely one without admixture.
This verse [means that] in the manifold layers of mind and object, the nature of original awakening is one: it can be said that a single incense and a single flower accord with the nature and pervade the realms as numerous as sands; a single gaze and a single bow are free from characteristics and constantly face the Buddha. Therefore a monk asked Dongshan: 'When cold and heat arrive, how should one avoid them?' Dongshan said: 'Why not go to the place where there is neither cold nor heat?' The monk said: 'What is the place where there is neither cold nor heat?' Dongshan said: 'When it is cold, it freezes the ācārya to death; when it is hot, it scorches the ācārya to death.' Xuedou said: 'Letting down the hands is just like a cliff of ten thousand fathoms; why must correct and biased be arranged? Since they are not arranged, take them up as the hand pleases.' All clarify this intention.
