Shadows appear at the threshold of teaching and transformation; / The body roams in the ground of ultimate principle. The meaning is: by means of the myriad differentiated phenomena, each one entirely pervades the one true principle. The Contemplation says: "Because partitioned phenomena are entirely identical with, not partially identical with, unpartitioned principle. Why? Because these phenomena are no different [from principle], their substance returning to be like principle." This gate of entire pervasion transcends sentiment and departs from views; no worldly metaphor can equal it. It is like the entire great ocean being within a single wave, yet the ocean is not small; it is like a single small wave encircling the great ocean, yet the wave is not large. Although the texts of these two gates of mutual pervasion are sequential, the phenomena are simultaneous. These two serve as the general, and the eight below serve as the particular. The particular does not depart from the general, serving as the root from which the meaning unfolds, directly clarifying that phenomena do not obstruct principle.
