Seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing are not single; / Mountains and rivers are not contemplated in a mirror. In this verse, "detached" means discarded. "Distant" means suspended far away. It means the true principle revealed is detached from all characteristics and cannot be fathomed by the six sentiments of seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing. If one seeks it through seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing, one has long been discarded far away from this principle. The Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: "The Dharma is detached from seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing." If one practices seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing, then it is seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing, not the Dharma. One must directly let go of emotional dust and turn the light inward; that is all.
