"Magadha" is translated into Chinese as "without poisonous harm," because in that country there was no corporal punishment or execution. The Buddha attained enlightenment there, and for three weeks he did not speak the Dharma, expressing that the path of words and names was cut off, resembling the closing of a chamber. "Vaiśālī" is translated into Chinese as "broad and adorned," because the city was level, broad, and magnificently adorned. The Upāsaka Vimalakīrti manifested illness and assembled all the bodhisattvas there. After each had finished speaking on the non-dual Dharma gate, Mañjuśrī asked: "What is the bodhisattva's entering the non-dual Dharma gate?" Vimalakīrti was silent without a word, which is called "shutting the mouth." Now, how could these two sages lack eloquence? It is because eloquence cannot express it. Do you want to understand? If you wish to understand before the empty eon was born, how could Buddhas and patriarchs ever declare it?
