問：具縛有情永斷菩薩未成福智，以何義故舊來成佛也？答：菩薩未斷不名成佛，菩薩斷盡、福智成竟，自此已去名為舊來成佛。

Question: For sentient beings bound by defilements and bodhisattvas in the process of eternally severing [afflictions] who have not yet perfected merit and wisdom, by what meaning have they originally become Buddhas? Answer: When a bodhisattva has not yet severed them, they are not called having become a Buddha; when a bodhisattva has severed them completely and merit and wisdom are fully perfected, from this point forward they are called having originally become a Buddha.
