Second, Question: Why is there a beginning and an end among the characters? Answer: In terms of the upāya of practice, it shows that cause and effect are distinct. Why are there many bends among the characters? To show that the faculties and desires of the Three Vehicles are differentiated and not the same. Why are the two characters for the beginning and the end placed in the center? To show that the true virtues and functions within the home of the dharmatā at the two positions of cause and effect have their nature in the Middle Way. Such are the characteristics of the characters.
