Question: What principle do the six characteristics manifest? Answer: They correctly manifest the non-conceptual principle of pratītyasamutpāda. On account of this principle of the six characteristics, you should know that although this single sūtra has different places—seven locations and eight assemblies—and various chapters, it resides solely in the "Chapter on the Stages" (Daśabhūmika). Why is this? Because it is the fundamental [chapter] that completely subsumes all phenomena. Within the "Chapter on the Stages," although there are differences among the ten stages, it resides solely in the first stage. Why is this? Because without leaving the single stage, it universally subsumes all merits of all stages. Within a single stage, although there are many different parts, it resides solely in a single thought-moment. Why is this? Because the three times and nine times are just a single thought-moment, and all is just one. Just as with a single thought-moment, multiple thought-moments are also like this. One is all, a single thought-moment is multiple thought-moments, and so on; reversing the preceding holds true as well. By virtue of this principle, the dhāraṇī teachings are mutually accomplished as ruler and retinue: whichever single phenomenon is raised, it completely subsumes all. If spoken of in terms of assemblies, within each assembly all are completely subsumed. If spoken of in terms of chapters, each chapter completely subsumes all. Even down to lines of text: each line and each phrase completely subsumes all. Why is this? Because without this, that would not be established. Such is the nature of the dhāraṇī teachings, as explained below.
