The Record of Zhen states: "The Tathāgata's single voice" is the sound of the universal characteristic. The Gandavyūha states: "I know the single nature of the dharmadhātu and the single voice of the Tathāgata (and so forth)." The meaning of this is that the various distinct voices and sounds of all sentient beings are simply the Tathāgata's single voice. Question: This good friend, the night-protecting deity, directly realized and saw the single voice, saying, 'I know the single nature of the dharmadhātu.' Why does it speak of 'all sentient beings'? If seeing all sentient beings, why say 'I know the single nature of the dharmadhātu'? Answer: Because of seeing the single nature of the dharmadhātu, one knows that within the single voice all kinds exist, because through attaining the universal characteristic one knows the particular characteristics that are not separated [from it]. This is just like the single word 'house', which is designated by coordinating the vertical posts, horizontal beams, and various supporting conditions. If it did not coordinate the vertical and horizontal conditions, where would the single word 'house' arise from?
