The Ancient Record says: Question: Ancient masters said: "The hall of causes and conditions, if made, is accomplished; if not made, is not accomplished. The hall of pratītyasamutpāda, if made, is not accomplished; if not made, is accomplished." What is the meaning of this? Answer: The house of identical characteristic involves the action of acting; the house of integrating characteristic involves the action of non-acting. When identical characteristic and integrating characteristic are spoken of in opposition: identical characteristic is the meaning of pratītyasamutpāda being present before one; integrating characteristic is the meaning of pratītyasamutpāda being devoid of self-nature. When integrating characteristic and disintegrating characteristic are spoken of in opposition: integrating characteristic, being non-acting action, is the meaning of natureless pratītyasamutpāda; disintegrating characteristic, being the non-action of action, is the meaning of pratītyasamutpāda being devoid of self-nature. An ancient text says: "Starting from the base stone of the pillar and ending at the tiles upon the beam, only then establishing the complete house—this is the hall of conceptual construction. Holding an axe and striking the wood, establishing the complete house with each and every blow—this is the hall of causes and conditions. The axe not falling upon the wood and the wood not violating the axe, yet establishing the complete house—this is the hall of pratītyasamutpāda. When the wood's sprout is green, establishing the complete house—this is the hall of nature manifestation. Within nature manifestation, when the seed of the wood is planted, establishing the complete house—this is the hall of non-abiding. When the seed is precisely the real, it is the hall of true reality." Kangzang says: "What is the house? The rafter is precisely the house. Why? Because the rafter completely and solely can make the house." Up to: "Question: If the rafter completely and solely can make the house, when there are not yet tiles and so forth, it should also make the house. Answer: When there are not yet tiles and so forth, it is not a rafter; therefore, it does not make [it]" (end of quotation). Question: Although there are no tiles and so forth, we presently see that it is a rafter; why say that when there are no tiles it is not a rafter? Answer: This is merely an objection based on conceptual construction. The Great Sūtra says: "The ocean of wisdom is vast and without shore; failing to fathom it, one instead increases slander." How can one not be cautious! Do not, with a mind of arising and ceasing, doubt the principle of true reality. This rafter of the causes and conditions of the universal Dharma of ours, being a single rafter, subsumes all other rafters of its own kind. Whether a one-foot bracket or an eight-foot pillar, down to tiles and stones, the carpenter who shapes the wood, the craftsman who fires the tiles, and so forth—all phenomena are universally and completely subsumed; only after the house is made completely can it then be considered a rafter. Hence it is so. An ancient said: "Today I fell a pillar, intending to make yesterday's already completed house. If so, was yesterday's already completed house accomplished without a pillar? Since he said, 'Today I fell a pillar, intending to make yesterday's already completed house,' we know that yesterday's already completed house was not accomplished without a pillar" (end of quotation). Therefore, only when the house is completed is it a pillar, and only when the house is completed is it a rafter.
