The Chapter on Differentiating Meanings says: Regarding perfect interfusion and gradation, four gates are taught: First, the gradation of the three vehicles and the perfect interfusion of the One Vehicle. As the text of the diagram says: 'Because it relies on the upāya teaching gate of the three vehicles, heights and depths are not uniform; because it relies on the perfect teaching of the One Vehicle, there is no before and after,' and so forth. Second, regarding this sūtra, the shared teaching of external appearance has two aspects: 1. Upwardly shared: drawing with space toward space, its substance is identical to space, unobstructed according to one's share; 2. Downwardly shared: downwardly resembling drawing on the ground, having before and after. Upwardly shared is the meaning of perfect interfusion; downwardly shared is the meaning of gradation, just as in the 'Stages Chapter' where a single bird's track encompasses both. Third, the shared teaching of external appearance is gradation, while the distinct teaching of its own substance is perfect interfusion. As the Chapter on the Expressed Meaning says: 'In establishing the teachings there are two skillful means,' and so forth. Also, the critical differentiation says: 'The stage of Samantabhadra has two,' and so forth, which is this. Fourth, regarding the distinct teaching of its own substance, not destroying the original position is gradation, while unobstructed perfect interfusion is perfect interfusion. That is, breadth and narrowness, having parts and having no parts; also, the gate of mutual entering where lack of intrinsic nature is not destroyed; also, not moving from one's own position yet constantly coming and going. Furthermore, among the six characteristics, three are perfect interfusion and three are gradation, and so forth.
