The Great Record states: According to Master Pyo-hun's intent, 'true' is the fundamental phenomenon of non-abiding, and 'nature' is the seed of one's fundamental share. As for 'the seed of one's fundamental share', pointing to the text, it refers to the five oceans of the fruition stage of the first assembly. Taking these five oceans as the essence of the fundamental consciousness, based on this fundamental consciousness, in later assemblies it is called 'gotra', or called 'activity', or called 'the determination of vows and wholesome roots', etc. That is to say, if someone of superior faculties directly relies on the realization aspect, they obtain their own body and mind as being directly dharmatā; however, because this locus of realization cuts off names and marks, persons of middling and lower faculties cannot yet believe it, so it is said that the five oceans are the source of your fundamental consciousness. Thereby those previous capacities attain their own body and mind as being directly dharmatā; therefore, relying on this true nature, one only then establishes the meaning of fundamental consciousness; hence in various teachings, it is either spoken of as the complete ālayavijñāna, or spoken of as the one-part arising-and-perishing ālayavijñāna, etc. Only those of Samantabhadra's capacity attain that their own fundamental consciousness is the source of the five oceans; therefore it is said to be the realm of the ten Buddhas and the great person Samantabhadra. Question: Since true nature is so extremely profound and subtle, in terms of what meaning is it divided into twenty-two stages? Answer: Because it does not keep its own nature, according to what I need, it conditions and forms the twenty-two stages from hell all the way to the Buddha-fruition. These twenty-two stages are sealed with the word 'universal' (samanta); when sealed, they are all the essential substance of Samantabhadra; therefore, the third layer of the ocean seal is precisely the realm of the great person Samantabhadra.
