Daoshen says: Conditions in the One Vehicle means that whenever a single phenomenon is brought up, it completely subsumes the remaining phenomena without residue as the conditions of this single phenomenon; the reality of various conditions such as the four conditions are all dissolved into the One Vehicle. Question: If following this approach, can one also say: committing the ten evils results in birth in heaven, and cultivating the ten virtues results in falling into hell? Answer: When one has attained this realization, one may speak of this meaning; before attaining this realization, it is not something to be transmitted to the crude. Master Yan constantly spoke of it. Question: Are superficial and deep expediently required? The answer explains this in detail. Question: When in the One Vehicle one kills that living being, does the one who can kill also die and incur sin? Answer: In the stage of mastery from understanding and practice onwards, one cultivates both the adverse and the favorable; inferior worldlings at the stage of seeing and hearing and below cannot see the capacities of beings, and to kill living beings carelessly brings no benefit to things and causes them to fall into hell themselves. Like that mouse imitating a lion's leap and falling into a pit of fire, and so forth. Question: If the three realms are all the Buddha, when plants and trees are taken and used, does this harm the Buddha's body and incur sin? Answer: Although in terms of the Buddha all are the Buddha, in terms of sentient beings none are the Buddha; what sin is incurred in cutting them down? Sentient beings and plants and trees are what is required according to the situation; although what is required is equally within myself, sentient beings are what is required where killing incurs sin, and plants and trees are what is required where cutting and taking incurs no sin.
