The True Record says: 'Neither first, nor middle, nor last' means seeking the obstacles to be severed across three kṣaṇas. Just as in the first kṣaṇa one raises wisdom to seek the obstacles, there are none that are not the substance of wisdom, so they cannot be severed. The middle and last are also like this. 'Because they are taken as front, middle, and back' means severing without severing. Regarding 'severed like empty space': if explained in terms of stages, empty space has the meaning of having no substantial entity, so there is neither that which severs nor that which is severed; thus it is severed like empty space. In terms of the One Vehicle, empty space has the meaning of having no boundary or edge; thus the substances of wisdom and obstacle mutually have no boundary or edge. Through this meaning of having no boundary or edge, it is severed like empty space.
