The Brief Strategy of the Avataṃsaka states: 'Ten expresses inexhaustibility; each one penetrates the profound. Whichever single dharma is raised, it immediately possesses ten. That is: 1. The gate of simultaneous complete correspondence, like a single drop of the ocean possessing the flavors of a hundred rivers. 2. The gate of the sovereign unobstructedness of broad and narrow, like a mirror one foot across reflecting a scene of a thousand leagues. 3. The gate of the mutual containment of one and many without being identical, like a thousand lamps in a single room whose lights interpenetrate. 4. The gate of the sovereignty of the mutual identity of all dharmas, like gold and the color of gold, the two being inseparable. 5. The gate of secret concealment and manifestation both accomplished, like the partial moon in a clear sky where darkness and brightness mutually reflect. 6. The gate of subtle mutual containment and establishment, like a lapis lazuli vase holding many mustard seeds. 7. The gate of the realm of Indra's net, like two mirrors mutually reflecting, transmitting radiance and pouring into each other, endlessly proceeding. 8. The gate of manifesting dharmas by relying on phenomena to produce understanding, like erecting an image or raising an arm—everything that meets the eye is the Way. 9. The gate of the distinct accomplishment of separated dharmas in the ten periods, like a single night's dream soaring through a hundred years. 10. The gate of ruler and retinue being completely luminous and possessing virtue, like the Northern Star abiding in its place while the myriad stars revolve around it.'
