The Great Record says: Regarding the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, the ancients said: in the title of the Great Sūtra, 'Great and Square' (dafang) refers to the vessel world; 'Broad and Buddha' (guang fo) refers to the Buddha realm; 'Flower' (hua) is the cause, from equal enlightenment above down to the six destinies below, which is the realm of sentient beings; 'Adornment' (yan) means that the pratītyasamutpāda of these three mutually interfuse, being completely luminous and free; 'Sūtra' (jing) means that with respect to the aforementioned spheres, the contemplative wisdom of the six characteristics—as understanding and as practice—stringing together and maintaining without loss. If contemplative wisdom has interruption and cannot continuously string together and maintain, it is not a sūtra. The universal is the seven-character title; the particular is the inexhaustible chapters and assemblies; the identical is that the chapters and assemblies are all identical; the distinct is that the chapters and assemblies are each distinct; the integrating is that pratītyasamutpāda gathers and accomplishes them; the disintegrating is that the chapters and assemblies each abide [in their own place].
