Fa's Record says: 'Only abiding in their own thusness' does not refer to the equal tathatā of the three vehicles in which appearances interfuse but substance does not interfuse; it is spoken in reference to the locus where substance and appearance are both interfused without discrimination, and the meaning within the disintegrating characteristic where originally nothing is produced and each abides in its own thusness. Regarding 'Because it relies on the upāya teaching gate of the three vehicles, heights and depths are not uniform,' and so forth: If in terms of the upāya practice of the three vehicles, then gradation of cause and effect has differing heights and depths. If relying on the true intention of the One Vehicle, then cause and effect are perfectly interfused, and the virtuous functions of dharmatā are solely in the Middle Way, hence it says 'there is no before and after.'
