Now, the skillful teaching of the Great Sage is without fixed direction; responding to capacities and according with ailments, it is not of a single kind. Those who are confused by it cling to traces without knowing they have lost the substance; though they strive diligently, their return to the source is not yet realized. Therefore, relying on principle and based on the teachings, I have briefly fashioned an intertwined poem, hoping that those disciples who cling to names may return to the nameless, true origin. As for the method of reading the poem: one should begin with the central dharma, winding around in twists and turns, until ending with the Buddha, reading in accordance with the path of the seal.
