The record of Zhenxiu says: "The fifty-four corners represent the spiritual friends (kalyāṇamitra) who are persons, namely the fifty-five spiritual friends. Because the initial and final appearances of Mañjuśrī are combined, there are only fifty-four; combining the initial and final appearances and embracing those in between forms a single complete wisdom. The spiritual friend Samantabhadra is the principle realized, for none of the phenomena of the dharmadhātu go beyond principle and wisdom. The two hundred and ten characters represent the spiritual friend that is the Dharma. That is to say, in the 'Chapter on Leaving the World,' the clouds of Universal Wisdom arise with two hundred questions, and Samantabhadra pours forth from his vase two thousand answers; for each question ten lines of answers are given, hence it is said to be 'ten.'"
