Fa's Record states: As for "those who are confused about it": they are people of the lower four teachings, because they do not know the non-abiding fundamental Dharma of the One Vehicle. As for "clinging to the tracks, they do not know that they have lost the substance": it is like a hunter vainly guarding a rabbit's tracks, not knowing how far away the rabbit's body is. Likewise, people of the three vehicles cultivate and practice as expounded for three incalculable kalpas, yet the fruit they attain is merely tracks; clinging to it as ultimate, they do not know they have lost the real substance of the One Vehicle. As for "toiling diligently, there is no day of returning to the source": practicing the six pāramitās and cultivating various bodhipakṣa dharmas for immeasurable kotis of nayutas of kalpas is why it is called "toiling diligently." Yet, there is no day when they return to the house of the One Vehicle; hence it is said that "there is no day of returning to the source."
