Fa's Record says: Regarding "the nature of lust, anger, and ignorance is precisely bodhi": the ancients said, "One only knows how to use water to clean things, but does not know how to clean turbid water." What does this mean? It means, for instance, if one wishes to clean water, if one takes stones [out of it], the water cannot become clear; only if the earth and stones are not stirred up will the water clear of itself. Purifying one's own mind is also like this: if one wishes to cut off the afflictions of the three poisons, the mind cannot become pure; if the three poisons are not stirred up, the mind becomes pure of itself. For this reason, whenever [Sudhana] visited the good friend, the brāhmaṇa Jayoṣmīyatana, and received the Dharma approach of ignorance, he immediately attained peaceful abiding and illumination. When he met King Anala and received the Dharma approach of anger, he immediately attained the samādhi of peaceful joy. When he met the good friend Vasumitrā and received the Dharma approach of greed, he immediately attained the reality-limit of freedom from desire.
