The Great Record says: In the fourth question-and-answer, it generally bases the question on both sentiment and principle; therefore, it answers with 'distinct' and 'not distinct' respectively. One [master] says: 'Previously, it revealed the Middle Way of realization and teaching in terms of the expressions of the three natures and three non-natures; now it reveals the Middle Way in terms of the meanings such as mutual dependence of root and branch, and thus asks.' In the answer, the meanings of distinct and not distinct are both in terms of the approach of principle. Another [master] says: 'Previously, it clarified the meaning of the single non-discrimination in terms of realization and teaching. If so, how are realization and teaching distinct? Thus it asks.' The intention of Xunde is that from this fourth question-and-answer downward there are four sections of meaning: from the question 'As stated above' up to 'therefore they are not distinct' is the indication. From the question 'If so' up to 'the two do not obstruct each other' is the explanation. 'Speaking and not speaking, etc.' is the conclusion. From 'Therefore the sūtra says' downward is citing proof. In the indication, it first indicates realization and teaching in contrast to clarify the meaning of distinction, and next indicates root and branch in contrast to clarify that they are not distinct. In the second, the explanation, there are five parts: 1. From the question 'If so' up to 'not different from the root' explains the contrast of root and branch. 2. From 'not different from the root' up to 'speaking without speaking' is the unhindered nature of quiescence and function, explaining the contrast of meaning and speech. 3. From 'speaking without speaking' up to 'speaking is non-speaking' explains the meaning above that the realization aspect is also speakable, and the teaching aspect is also unspeakable. 4. From 'speaking is non-speaking' up to 'not speaking is unobtainable' explains the meaning that the nature of both phenomena, realization and teaching, is of one taste in the Middle Way. 5. 'Both are unobtainable' reveals that variety does not obstruct the single taste; therefore, it fully states both speaking and not speaking. The five explanatory phrases above correspond to the fivefold ocean seal. 3. In the conclusion, the meaning of speaking and not speaking speaks of the good determination of the vows of the two greats: birth and non-birth. 6. In the place of determination, moving and not moving are the fundamental entry into the nine entries and so forth.
