Fa's Record says: Regarding 'root and branch being identical': in the mature teaching, extinguishing the branch that arises relying on the root and returning it back to the root only then reveals the one mind; relying on that, it reveals that the two dharmas of realization and teaching of the One Vehicle have their natures in the Middle Way. Regarding 'name and meaning being mutual guests': in the initial teaching, by name and meaning being mutual guests, it reveals the principle of the selflessness of name and meaning; relying on that, it reveals the meaning of the two dharmas of realization and teaching of the One Vehicle having no self-nature. Regarding 'the principle revealed is not different, [while] the upāyas of the expressive teachings differ': the meanings established in the initial teaching and the mature teaching differ, yet relying on the meanings of selflessness and the Middle Way revealed by them, it reveals the meaning of the non-duality of realization and teaching of the One Vehicle.
