First, the robes of tīrthikas: The root Vinaya text states that embroidered robes, bark robes, leaf robes, pearl-garland robes, wooden bowls, and all robes of tīrthikas, leather garments, bird-feather garments, human-hair garments, horse-hair garments, cat-tail garments, cow-tail garments, kambala garments, and so forth, down to the descendants of Old Li in the Tang land with their yellow kerchiefs, cowls, capes, and the like—all of the above are prohibited by the Vinaya from being worn, and by principle are judged under the category of heavy property. This is because they are distinguishing signs of heterodox paths, and not proper robes. If someone offers them, their acceptance is also permitted. If their color and appearance have already been altered, then with the exception of tree bark and animal or human hair, the remainder are judged according to what follows, being classified as light property and distributed.
