There is an inevitable event, called death. The Sole Honored One of the Western Heavens and the various sages of the Eastern Realm are still subject to it. If one is subject to it, then the ritual judgment of light and heavy property within the Dharma of Śākyamuni is something that cannot be set aside for even a moment. Therefore, although the clear texts in the commentaries and subcommentaries of our Great Master Fahui diligently opened what was hidden and revealed what was latent, he was perhaps spiritually inspired to produce these *Regulations for Distributing Light and Heavy Property*. Even amidst the tangled mixture of light and heavy, its text is towering and distinct, bright like the sun and moon. All schools prize it together, and the three kingdoms crane their necks [in admiration]—truly not without reason! Yet after the ancestral lineage suffered a decline, this text hid its light for a long time. Guests who love the study of the precepts held this grief within themselves. Alas! Heaven did not allow this text to perish, and by chance it was obtained from the library of the Vinaya Temple at the Iwashimizu Hachimangū Shrine. Although the meaning suffers no great injury, the text is slightly missing, which may be called precarious. I reflect that the author of this work, by imperial order, later resided at Ximing Monastery, where later generations chanced upon the Vinaya manuals; our National Master, Bodhisattva Kōshō, by decree revived this shrine temple, and now in these times we chanced upon this text. From this we know that sages and worthies do not come and wander in vain. Fearing that the ancestral teachings might become lost in time and thereby failing the Faithful Great Being, I have ventured to copy it. However, errors of transcription have multiplied, and without punctuation it posed stumbling blocks; hence I added Japanese kana glosses alongside to respond to the woodblock carver's request. It is hoped that when that inevitable event arrives, judgments may be made at once, avoiding the humiliation of borrowing someone else's awkward help to save the drowning.
